Nearly half the FTSE 250 is now hiring for AI governance

A survey published in early August found that 45% of FTSE 250 firms have either hired or are actively recruiting for senior AI governance roles. A year ago that number was around 10%. Whatever else it says, a four-fold move in twelve months is not a trend, it's a correction.
What actually happened here
Companies bought AI tools first and asked who owned the risk second. The recruiting surge is the second question arriving late. It tends to follow a specific trigger: an enterprise customer sends an AI questionnaire, or an auditor asks for a list of systems, and nobody can produce one.
What I'd do about it
If you're watching peers post these roles and wondering whether to follow, the answer is not automatically a headcount. Governance is a function before it's a job. Run the inventory first, classify what you find, and only then decide whether the work justifies a permanent salary or a couple of days a week. You can do the first part yourself with the published walkthrough.
The failure mode I'd watch for is hiring a governance lead into a company that has never mapped its own estate. They spend their first quarter doing discovery you could have done in three weeks, and you pay executive rates for it.
